Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix), (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil Zoologia
Ambrósio,Ângela Maria; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Ângelo Antônio.
Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) was determined. Data were collected from December 1983 to November 1984 and from April 1997 to March 1998 in the Itaipu Reservoir. To evaluate reading consistency, it was analyzed the coefficient of variation of the total length for each annulus observed in the otoliths. Through marginal increment analysis, it was determined that the annuli formed annually (April) indicating that otoliths may be used in the study of age and growth of the species. Food supply was considered the main factor affecting growth and annuli formation in both periods. Back-calculated data were used to assess if the Rosa Lee phenomenon, commom in selective samples like commercial fishing, occured....

Agricultural crops in the diet of bearded capuchin monkeys, Cebus libidinosus Spix (Primates: Cebidae), in forest fragments in southeast Brazil Zoologia
Freitas,Carlos Henrique de; Setz,Eleonore Z. F.; Araújo,Alba R. B.; Gobbi,Nivar.
Capuchin monkeys occupy a wide range of habitats where they feed on fruits, arthropods, and vertebrates. Their large home ranges (80-900 ha) suggest that living in forest fragments may challenge their adaptability. We identified and quantified the main food items of Cebus libidinosus Spix, 1823 in forests fragments (100 ha) in southeastern Brazil. We recorded the feeding activities of two groups using scan sampling over a 13-month period. The diet was composed of fruits, crops, animal prey, seeds, plant matter and undetermined. Fruit was eaten more in the wet season than in the dry season, and maize and sugar cane consumption peaked in the early dry season. The proportion of fruit in the diet was positively correlated with fruiting intensity of zoochorous...

Aleochara pseudochrysorrhoa, a new species from southern Brazil (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae), with a complete checklist of Neotropical species of the genus Zoologia
Caron,Edilson; Mise,Kleber M.; Klimaszewski,Jan.
The ectoparasitoid habit of larvae and the active predatory habit of adults of Aleochara Gravenhorst, 1802 established this group as natural fly regulators and important for ecological studies, biological control programs and forensic entomology. In the current study, a new aleocharine species, Aleochara pseudochrysorrhoa sp. nov., from southern Brazil, is described and its natural history is briefly discussed. The species has a robust body, uniformly dark-brown to black with apex of abdomen rust-brown, median lobe of male with expanded bulbus, sclerites of internal sac forming complex arrangement, and female with spermatheca L-shaped. Aleochara pseudochrysorrhoa sp. nov. may be considered to be closely related to the species belonging to the lustrica...

Algumas características da reprodução e ontogênese de Epilachna paenulata (Germar) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae, Epilachninae) Zoologia
Ganho,Norma G.; Marinoni,Renato C..
Epilachna paenulata (Germar, 1824) was reared feeding on pumpkin leaves (Cucurbita pepo Lourt.) in laboratory conditions at temperatures of 20±0,5ºC, relative humidity of 65±0,5% and 12 hour photoperiod. Groups of fecunded and non-fecunded females were studied. The ovarioles showed four developing stages during egg production, morphologically alike for fecunded and non-fecunded females, but differing in the duration time of the stages. Each ovarium has 24 ovarioles on average, less than any other species known into the genus, and all ovarioles are physiologically active at each oviposition. The mean number of ovarioles is lower when compared with the other species of Epilachninae known. Fecunded and non-fecunded females showed a similar preoviposition...

Females of white-eared opossum Didelphis albiventris (Lund, 1841) from natural population of the "cerrado", State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, present a seasonal reproductive activity. Young-pouches were found in females captured from August to March. During the months of April to July youngs were not present in the pouch. The only two females captured in July showed pregnant uterus. All females collected in August and September were litter positive. The average number of individuais per litter was 7.04 ± 1.9.

Alguns dados sobre a reprodução do garibáldi, Agelaius r. ruficapillus (Icteridae, Aves) em lavouras de arroz no Rio Grande do Sul Zoologia
Fallavena,Maria Alice Bello.
Agelaius r. ruficapillus is gregarious, being found in large flocks in Rio Grande do Sul during most of the year; they nest in natural marshes or rice fields. This bird is accused by farmers of causing damage to rice at all stages of its growth and Belton, 1985, believes it may now be the most abundant bird in the state. Its reproductive biology in rice fields in southern Rio Grande do Sul was observed from 1981 to 1983, with more emphasis from november 1982 to march 1983. Capture and banding of 16 birds with aluminum and plastic colored bands were made; nine nests were marked with steel stakes. It was found that the male is responsible for the construction of the nest, which the female lines inside. The clutch varies from three to four eggs, three being...

Survey of 30 stoniach and/or gut contents of the five species of Siphlophis Fitzinger, 1843 revealed predominance of mostly diurnal species of lizards. Remains of nocturnal prey and snakes were also found. For the first time, one frog and one bat are recorded as preys of one species (S. cervimis Laurenti, 1768). Predation on mollusks and birds is not confirmed herein.

Alimentação de Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier) (Perciformes, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Vendel,Ana Lúcia; Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha.
Seasonal variation of food items of Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier, 1830) classified by size was analysed based on monthly samples between september/1993 and september/1996 at the Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazil. The stomach contents of a hundred eighty-two fishes were analysed by the Occunence Frequency Method and Point Count for a Lot Method. The individuais were divided in two groups, smaller and longer than 140mm, and a comparative study of digestive tract and branchial are was performed for these groups. For fishes smaller than 140mm the following sequence of items was obtained matching both methods by using the Preponderance índices: decapods (subdivided in Brachyura, Caridea and Penaeidea), polychaets, isopods, fishes, unidentified material, copepods,...
